What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence is a term made popular by Psychologist Daniel Goleman circa 1995 to describe how a person’s emotional literacy impacts their quality of life, work and that of their relationships.

In essence, Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence is measured in terms of a person’s Self Awareness (awareness of their own emotions and their effect on others), Self Management (one’s ability to manage their emotions and motivate one’s self), Social Awareness (ability to accurately observe, empathize with, and influence others), and Relationship Management (ability to navigate the complicated intricacies of human relationships).

Goleman posits that human beings who are skilled in these 4 areas have a higher level of satisfaction in their relationships, work, and general ability to manage the ups and downs of life.

In a recent article published in the Harvard Business Review, Goleman explains that Emotional Intelligence (which he refers to as EI), isn’t about being “nice,” but is instead about a person’s willingness and ability to engage directly with life and work issues; not to passively avoid them or cause unnecessary drama, but to decipher the problem, manage one’s emotional responses and directly address the issue as needed.

What does the EQ School do?

The EQ School teaches workshops, offers self-paced online courses, and provides 1:1 coaching to people who wish to improve their emotional intelligence skills.

We teach a 4 or 5 week workshops on each of the areas of EQ: Self Awareness, Self Management, and Social Awareness/Relationship Management. We also sometimes add workshops on relevant topics, like Boundaries, Designing Work Culture, Adult Friendship, or Giving & Receiving Feedback.

It is highly recommended to start with Self-Awareness, as it’s the foundation for the other 3 areas of EQ.

Who are these workshops for?

Anyone interested in sharpening their EQ skills!

Our participants tend to be a little on the anxious, introverted, “overthinking” side and thus enjoy having a small, safe group in which to explore these topics - though we’ve had plenty of extroverts, too!

We also tend to have a 50/50 split of men and women, and while our average participants tends to be millennial aged, participants have spanned in age from 22-65, so anyone is welcome!

These workshops and the coaching sessions are especially helpful for people feeling “stuck” in their lives, or who are ready to move on to the next level or stage of work, relationships, or general happiness.

They’re specifically for:

  • People struggling with resentment in their relationships who want tools & practice around setting boundaries.

  • People who want to improve their communication skills.

  • People who want to feel more connected to their friends, families, and partners.

  • People who want to better understand their emotions and how to move through them.

  • People who want to increase their confidence.

  • People who have a lot of feelings and aren’t sure what to do with them.

  • People who avoid feelings because they don’t know what to do with them.

  • People who want to meet like-minded friends who are interested in personal development.

  • People who want to continue to work on healing trauma and childhood wounds.

The workshops are designed to help you learn tools for working through adversity while learning to appreciate and become more confident in your own strengths and abilities.

The workshops are also designed to help you connect with others both in and outside the workshop, so if you’re looking to improve your interpersonal relationships, they will certainly be helpful!
